HACHIJOJIMA

Hachijojima - a gourd-shaped island with an area of 69.11 km² lies in the Pacific Ocean in the subtropics 287 km south of Tokyo. It is a volcanic island consisting of Mt. Mihara (700.9 m) and Mt. Hachijo Fuji (854.3 m) which are great for a one day hike.

Bathed by the warm Kuroshio Current (the Black current), Hachijojima boasts an average annual temperature of 17.8°C making diving and similar activities possible all-year with proper equipment.

Main industries are horticulture and coastal fishing; the island is famous for Shochu (distilled spirits), Kusaya, Ashitaba products, Kihachijo silk woven handicrafts, and Shimazushi (island sushi).

Lush nature, fresh air, plethora of hot springs, unique cuisine, rich history, and warm waters will definitely revitalize you!

It is no secret that traveling to new locations can be rewarding, however, sometimes it turns out stressful when one encounters language barriers and the lack of comprehensible information. The time has come to put an end to the scarcity of information related to this Tokyo island.

The website is ran by the International Relations Staff at the town hall with the support of local foreigners.
